From Reddit (r/Tajikistan): This is a complicated matter that is not really that easy to explain. Nobody is exactly sure what is going on, so at present I don't know what best to say. All of my friends have been asking me about this. Tajikistan is a country where to a large extent the law doesn't matter. Because rule of law is weak, it's just rule of whoever happens to be the boss somewhere. Tajikistan already has lots of laws that are not really enforced. Some of them are absurd. These laws function in a corrupt system where they don't apply to everyone, people choose not to comply with them, not to enforce them, to use them to extract bribes, to get fines so the government can make money, etc. The system is designed so it's not possible to live in it without breaking some law, so the government always has an excuse to do something to someone it doesn't like. This is not the first time something like this has happened, and it won't be the last time probably. This law seems weird because hijab is very common in Tajikistan, like the vast majority of women cover their hair. It would be impossible to enforce, and violent enforcement would be very unpopular for the government, which likes to pretend to be popular. So I don't think they can or want to go all the way in enforcing it because that would drive up resentment. Rather, it's likely just to be business as usually with one more "rule" added on to the pile. Hijab has not been explicitly banned in this law. The law nonsensically states that "foreign clothing" is prohibited. This cannot reasonably interpreted or applied. Western dress, which the Tajik government prefers and promotes, is foreign to Tajikistan, but hijab is not. So who is going to decide what is actually foreign and why is going to be a real circus. The police right now are not arresting all women who cover their hair. Women are being told to cover their hair in a certain way/style but not in other ways. The state has always liked to control people's dress/appearance. This is not a new issue, but dates back decades.

The Dominican Republic and other nations may be taking satisfaction in Haiti's current misery and struggles, viewing it as a source of shame. Haiti has indeed reached a low point. However, just as the world witnessed China's rise from its years of humiliation to its current power, the same could be said for Haiti. Although it may not occur within our lifetime, Haiti will eventually return to its former glory.

I don't think you understand what the point of the UN Permanent Security Council members are. You say that the veto is a road block to progress and peace, no its not. You don't understand it and what it has accomplished. That veto power is the only thing stopping China, Russia, the US from starting a kinetic war, or participating in proxy wars to get what they want. Instead of going to war, they can just veto it instead. That's how the veto contributes to world peace, it gives the nations with the military strength to unilaterally achieve their goals a way to achieve said goals without the use of violence, preventing a conflict from occurring. Them "hindering" them each other is exactly what you want. Conflicts is what happens in international diplomacy when differing people have differing interests. Would you prefer if they shot each other instead? The veto is not a democratic right. Obviously not, it overrides democratic rulings made by the general assembly. The veto is a military right awarded for military power. It existed because those were the major countries who, if not appeased during the formation of the UN as a body after WW2 and given special rights within it, would reject the UN entirely. They had the military strength to wage war independently after WW2 and were beholden to no one. They were given these undemocratic rights to appease them based on the reality that if you did not, they would have never accepted the UN as an organization. If the US doesn't recognize the UN, then no other country would bother to join because you have to deal with the US separately anyway. Ultimately the permanent members start a war to take what they want anyway. What can the general assembly do against them? Nothing. It's this military reality which explains why these 5 countries have this status. Keep in mind how nuts of an idea the UN even is. Post WW2, the idea that there could be any "world government" that had powers which superseded the powers of sovereign nations and elected leaders of those nations is insane. What country would give up their right to self determination to a conglomerate of foreign powers? If the veto wasn't given to these 5 nations, the UN just never would have formed as there wouldn't be enough buy in, and all of the positive aspects of the UN would have been lost like the UN WFP. Although, I do think the UK especially should be booted from permanent member status. They are not really a threat nowadays anymore. France at least is still economically ok and part of the EU, the UK has lost a lot of power in recent decades.

11:56 you can’t say the Chechens were using civilians as human shields. That’s an ignorant thing to say. They are in their home land fighting off a foreign conquest of their lands. Where are the supposed to fight in your home? There are civilians there that’s it. Russia didn’t care about them. Are the Ukrainian army using Ukrainian civilians as human shields? If you agree to say this let’s talk.

I am not sure what your message is intended to portray: a generally good or bad system? Having lived and worked in Singapore and passed through on vaction dozens of times, I feel that the article is highly misleading. If you compare the govermental incompetence of countries, such as my own, The United Kingdom, where some professional people, such as teachers, need to visit food-banks in order to get enough to eat - where prison staff routinely trade drugs with the inmates they are supposed to guard - where police forces are classified as 'institutionally racist' - there is no comparison. The ONLY reason that I now do not live in the republic is because I did not foresee the incredible development and economic growth of the nation when I first workled in the region - Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia during the 1980s. Residential property would have been affordable for me in those days. The 'penny did not drop' as it should have when I disembarked at Changi Airport from a Qantas flight from London on the March 2nd 1982. The cleanliness and orderliness were stunning - such a contrast from the depression-hit, riot-torn U.K. under the Margaret THATCHER regime which I had left with glee and to the great benefit of my psyche. No country is perfect. There are restrictions in all, without which we would have anarchy - some countries are close: Nigeria, Sudan etc.. Remember that Singapore is a very young nation. Some European states, by comparison, have existed for centuries. Greater political freedom will evolve there as it has in Europe. It is not that long ago that women could not vote in the U.K.. Yes, it is a 'fine-city' but the rules and laws are very clear: the landing card states in red capital letters: 'DEATH FOR DRUG TRAFFICKERS UNDER SINGAPOREAN LAW.' Then compare Singapore with the narco-terrorism of Colombia and Mexico, and drug use in parts of the major cities of the U.K. and the U.S.A.. There is NO opiod epidemic and there are no multiple homicides In Singapore. The politics of the U.S.A. do not look very healthy at present in spite of its precious written 'constitution' - which does not apply to the inmates of the Guantanamo prison under US control (we do NOT even have a written constitution in the U.K., only an unelected monarchy and an unelected House of Lords). Given the choice of living in Singapore or Europe then I would choose Singapore if I could afford it. But, should vistors and citizens alike wish to leave, then they are perfectly free to do so and citizens can take their all of their CPF (compulsory savings) assets with them. There is total freedom of tranfer of assets, which is more than could be said during Prime Minsister Harold WILSON's regime. What is even more remarkable is what Singapore has done without any natural resources other than sunshine, fresh air and the intellectual assets of its people. The Education system is about the best in the World. They have no oil, no natural gas, no coal, no gold, no lumber, no gemstones and not even enough fresh water, which is imported from Malaysia. What have the millions of Pounds worth of coal exported from the valleys of Wales done for its residents - what has the oil wealth from the North Sea done for the people of the U.K.? Thatcher squandered most of it on the dole-queues during the 1980s when unemploymemt trebled under the Con Party. Unlike Norway the U.K. did not amass any sovereign wealth fund from its oil resources. Best go yourself to judge the nation state. Leave the touristic areas such as Orchard Road and see how and where the locals live. Clean, safe and organised - where the young people do not have the nihilistic grunge look of the Western World. I cannot imagine a better nation in which to raise teenage children. See how you can visit a club or a restuarant at any time of day or night and, even females alone, need NOT worry about stepping on a discarded hypodermic needle, about being molested or tripping over people begging and living on the streets - there are none! It IS very expensive nowadays, especially during the Formula 1 week - a 'victim' of its own sucess perhaps but, as they say: 'quality is always in demand!' Please comment on my comment should you wish. Perhaps we should have a PAP in the U.K. - I joke not!
